ABOUT THE PLAY
Room 1214 recounts the events that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida, on Valentine’s Day, 2018, when a nineteen-year-old walked into his former high school with an assault rifle and took the lives of fourteen students, three teachers, and injured seventeen more.
Based on real interviews with Ivy Shamis, the teacher who taught about hate crimes as part of a Holocaust history class in room 1214, where some of the worst violence was committed, this play imagines what would happen if Ivy had one more chance to teach in that classroom, and begs the question, “can a history teacher rewrite history?”
This story combines docudrama with a meta-theatrical sensibility (The Laramie Project meets Our Town) to provide a firsthand account of gun violence through the lens of survivors. Often, news coverage depicts students and parents grappling in the aftermath, but this play explores the heart and mind of a beloved teacher, giving voice to a community directly affected by America’s gun epidemic.
